What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that covers the entire visible portion of a damaged tooth. Think of it as a protective shell that restores your tooth’s original shape, size, and strength. Crowns are custom-made to match the color and appearance of your natural teeth, so they blend seamlessly with your smile.

Crowns serve multiple purposes. They protect weak teeth from breaking, hold together cracked teeth, restore worn-down teeth, and support teeth with large fillings when not much of the original tooth remains. They also complete dental implants and improve the appearance of misshapen or severely discolored teeth.

Types of Dental Crowns We Offer

Every smile is unique, and we offer several types of crowns to meet your specific needs. Porcelain crowns are popular for front teeth because they provide the most natural appearance. They’re strong, durable, and resistant to staining.

Zirconia crowns offer exceptional strength and durability, making them ideal for back teeth that handle heavy chewing forces. These crowns are also metal-free, which appeals to patients who prefer a more natural approach.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns combine the strength of metal with the aesthetic appeal of porcelain. While they’re strong and long-lasting, the metal base can sometimes show as a dark line near the gum line over time.

We’ll help you choose the right type of crown based on the location of your tooth, your budget, and your personal preferences.

Same-Day Crowns with CEREC Technology

Waiting weeks for a permanent crown is now a thing of the past. At Oasis Dental, we use CEREC technology to create high-quality crowns in a single visit. This advanced system allows us to design, mill, and place your crown in just one appointment.

The process is simple and comfortable. We take digital impressions of your tooth, eliminating the need for messy traditional molds. The CEREC machine then creates your custom crown right here in our office while you wait. Within a few hours, you’ll leave with a beautiful, permanent crown.

Same-day crowns save you time and eliminate the need for temporary crowns. You won’t need to return for a second appointment, and you can get back to your normal routine right away.

The Dental Crown Procedure

Getting a dental crown typically involves two visits if you choose traditional crowns, or just one visit with our CEREC same-day crowns. During your first appointment, Dr. Amin will examine your tooth and prepare it by removing any decay and reshaping it to accommodate the crown.

For traditional crowns, we’ll take impressions of your prepared tooth and place a temporary crown to protect it while your permanent crown is being made at a dental laboratory. This process usually takes about two weeks.

When your permanent crown is ready, you’ll return for your second visit. Dr. Amin will remove the temporary crown, check the fit and color of your new crown, and permanently cement it in place. We’ll make sure your bite feels comfortable before you leave.

With same-day CEREC crowns, all of these steps happen in a single appointment, saving you time and hassle.

Benefits of Dental Crowns

Dental crowns offer numerous benefits beyond just protecting damaged teeth. They restore full chewing function, allowing you to eat your favorite foods without worry. Crowns can last 10 to 15 years or longer with proper care, making them a smart long-term investment in your oral health.

Crowns also improve the appearance of your smile. They cover discolored, misshapen, or damaged teeth, giving you a more uniform and attractive smile. Because they’re custom-made to match your natural teeth, most people won’t even notice you have a crown.

Studies show that dental crowns are highly effective at restoring and protecting damaged teeth, helping you maintain your natural smile for years to come.

Caring for Your Dental Crowns

Taking care of your crowns is simple and similar to caring for your natural teeth. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily to keep your gums healthy and prevent decay around the crown’s edges. Regular dental checkups every six months allow us to monitor your crown and ensure it’s functioning properly.

Avoid habits that could damage your crown, such as chewing ice, biting fingernails, or using your teeth to open packages. If you grind your teeth at night, we may recommend a nightguard to protect both your crowns and natural teeth.

With proper care, your dental crown can serve you well for many years, helping you maintain a strong, healthy smile.
