What Is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a fixed dental restoration that replaces one or more missing teeth by literally bridging the gap left behind. The bridge consists of artificial teeth, called pontics, that are held in place by dental crowns attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. These supporting teeth are called abutment teeth.

Unlike removable dentures, bridges are permanently cemented in place, so they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You don’t need to remove them for cleaning or worry about them slipping while you eat or speak.

Bridges are custom-made to match the color, shape, and size of your natural teeth, ensuring they blend seamlessly with your smile. With proper care, a dental bridge can last 10 to 15 years or even longer.

Types of Dental Bridges

We offer several types of bridges to meet different needs and situations. Traditional bridges are the most common type. They consist of one or more pontics held in place by crowns on either side. This type requires preparing the adjacent teeth by removing some enamel to accommodate the crowns, but it provides excellent strength and stability.

Cantilever bridges are used when there’s only one adjacent tooth available to support the bridge. The pontic is anchored by a crown on just one side rather than both. These bridges work well for replacing back teeth where there’s less biting pressure, but they’re not suitable for all situations.

Maryland bonded bridges, also called resin-bonded bridges, are more conservative than traditional bridges. Instead of crowns, the pontic is held in place by metal or porcelain wings bonded to the back of the adjacent teeth. This approach preserves more natural tooth structure but is typically only appropriate for front teeth that don’t experience heavy chewing forces.

Implant-supported bridges are used when you’re missing several teeth in a row. Rather than being supported by natural teeth, the bridge is anchored to dental implants surgically placed in your jawbone. This option provides the most stability and doesn’t require altering adjacent natural teeth.

During your consultation, Dr. Amin will evaluate your specific situation and recommend the type of bridge that will provide the best long-term results.

Benefits of Dental Bridges

Dental bridges offer numerous advantages for patients with missing teeth. They restore your ability to chew properly, allowing you to enjoy all your favorite foods without difficulty. Many people don’t realize how much a missing tooth affects their chewing efficiency until it’s replaced.

Bridges also improve your speech. Missing teeth, especially front teeth, can cause you to slur certain sounds or develop a lisp. A bridge fills the gap and helps you speak clearly and confidently.

One of the most important benefits is preventing other teeth from shifting. When you lose a tooth, the neighboring teeth gradually drift into the empty space, and the opposing tooth can move up or down. This shifting can lead to bite problems, jaw pain, and increased risk of decay and gum disease. A bridge maintains proper spacing and alignment.

Bridges restore the natural shape of your face. Missing teeth can cause facial muscles to sag over time, creating a sunken appearance that makes you look older. A bridge provides support for your facial structure.

Perhaps most importantly, bridges boost your confidence. You can smile, laugh, and eat in public without feeling self-conscious about gaps in your smile.

The Dental Bridge Procedure

Getting a dental bridge typically requires two to three visits to Oasis Dental. During your first appointment, Dr. Amin will examine your mouth, take X-rays, and discuss your treatment options. If you decide a bridge is right for you, he’ll prepare your abutment teeth by removing a portion of enamel to make room for the crowns that will support your bridge.

After preparing your teeth, Dr. Amin will take detailed impressions of your teeth. These impressions are sent to a dental laboratory where skilled technicians will create your custom bridge. This process typically takes one to two weeks.

To protect your prepared teeth while your permanent bridge is being made, Dr. Amin will place a temporary bridge. This temporary restoration allows you to eat and speak normally while waiting for your final bridge.

When your permanent bridge is ready, you’ll return to our office for your final appointment. Dr. Amin will remove the temporary bridge and try in your new permanent bridge. He’ll check the fit, shape, color, and your bite to ensure everything is perfect. If any adjustments are needed, he’ll make them before permanently cementing the bridge in place.

Before you leave, Dr. Amin will provide detailed care instructions to help you maintain your bridge and keep it looking and functioning beautifully for years to come.

Caring for Your Dental Bridge

Maintaining your dental bridge is essential for its longevity and your oral health. Brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, paying special attention to the areas where your bridge meets your natural teeth. Plaque can accumulate in these areas, leading to decay or gum disease if not removed regularly.

Flossing is crucial for bridge care but requires a special technique. You’ll need to thread the floss under the pontic to clean the gum tissue beneath it. Dr. Amin and our team will show you how to do this properly. Floss threaders or water flossers can make this process easier.

Use an antibacterial mouthwash daily to help reduce plaque and bacteria around your bridge. Avoid chewing hard foods like ice, hard candy, or popcorn kernels, which could potentially damage your bridge. Don’t use your teeth as tools to open packages or bite non-food items.

Visit Oasis Dental every six months for professional cleanings and exams. During these appointments, we’ll check your bridge to ensure it’s functioning properly and clean hard-to-reach areas. Early detection of any problems allows us to address them before they become serious.

If you grind your teeth at night, Dr. Amin may recommend a nightguard to protect both your bridge and natural teeth from excessive wear.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Dental Bridge?

Most people with one or more missing teeth are candidates for dental bridges. However, certain factors affect whether a bridge is the right choice for you. You need healthy, strong teeth on either side of the gap to support a traditional bridge. These abutment teeth must have sufficient bone support and no active decay or gum disease.

Your gums should be healthy. If you have periodontal disease, it will need to be treated before receiving a bridge. Good oral hygiene habits are essential for maintaining a bridge long-term.

Patients who grind their teeth may be candidates for bridges, but they’ll need to wear a nightguard to protect the restoration. If you have insufficient bone support in the area where teeth are missing, an implant-supported bridge might be a better option than a traditional bridge.

During your consultation, Dr. Amin will thoroughly evaluate your oral health and discuss whether a bridge is the best solution for replacing your missing teeth.

Alternatives to Dental Bridges

While bridges are an excellent tooth replacement option, they’re not the only solution. Dental implants replace both the root and crown of missing teeth, offering the most natural-looking and longest-lasting results. Implants don’t require altering adjacent teeth, which is a significant advantage. However, they require surgery and typically cost more than bridges.

Partial dentures are removable appliances that replace multiple missing teeth. They’re typically the most affordable option but may feel less stable than bridges. Some patients find removable dentures uncomfortable or worry about them slipping while eating or speaking.

Complete dentures replace all teeth in an upper or lower arch. These are only appropriate if you’re missing most or all of your teeth.

Dr. Amin will help you understand the pros and cons of each option so you can make an informed decision about your tooth replacement treatment.
